My Story
“No one will be heard in the future who does not speak short bursts of truth.”
– Saul Bellow (1914-2005)
Writing an autobiography is an incredibly difficult undertaking! I’m not ashamed to admit that, since embarking on adulthood oh so long ago, I have struggled to find my way in the world. Many of the things I’ve done since I “left the nest” appear (in retrospect) as if they were somewhat like experiments. I have learned a great deal from the different paths I have taken over the last few years, but I can’t say it has been an easy journey.
Of late, things have taken a turn for the better. My image of myself and my future in my own mind’s eye, which was quite fuzzy for so long, has come into sharper focus. And more important: I have taken control of the direction of my life and have established a number of long-term goals that excite me immensely.
In the proverbial quest to “find myself” — which took place somewhat belatedly for me, in my late twenties and early thirties — I discovered that helping others find a sense of purpose in their lives is (ironically!) what gives me the greatest sense of purpose in my own life. Unfortunately, I haven’t had many outlets for that passion.
Until now, that is. I’m confident that my contributions to my personal blog, to My Healthy Future, and to the chronicle of my current educational pursuits are long-overdue steps in the right direction. My hope is that they will give me an opportunity to explore some of my passions. And then in time, I trust that these “short bursts of truth” will grow into well-developed ideas that can somehow make a positive difference in the world. As I said in my inaugural blog post:
I can’t shake the sense that, if I can do some small thing that will make the world an even slightly better place, then I should do so. … It is time to set my thoughts free.
